The vision of the Kula Community Association is to preserve open space, support agriculture,
maintain a rural residential atmosphere, and to work together as a community.
The specific purpose of this association is to improve the quality of life for the residents of Kula,
to promote civic welfare, and generally to benefit the community of Kula.
RESOLUTION: Relating to the Use of Kahului Harbor
WHEREAS, many Kula and Upcountry residents depend on agriculture for their financial survival; and
WHEREAS, Young Brothers has indicated that it intends to discontinue shipment of less
than full container loads and this action will adversely impact Kula agriculture and small businesses; and
WHEREAS, the SuperFerry is considering providing for less than full container loads; and
WHEREAS, Kula residents and visitors value our rural lifestyle and natural environment; and
WHEREAS Kula shares a border with the Haleakala National Park, home to numerous
endangered native plants and animals; and
WHEREAS many native plants and animals are found throughout Kula in cultivated and
natural areas; and
WHEREAS, Kula’s natural environment, native species, and crops are vulnerable
to invasive plants and destructive insects; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the Kula Community Association Board of Directors:
That a long-range Kahului Harbor plan and a Final Environmental Impact Statement
be completed prior to commencement of service of the SuperFerry; and
That issues related to less than container load shipments be addressed to provide
benefits to agriculture; and
That there be no interruption of less than container load shipments by Young Brothers.
